This post is one of my favorites! Brittany and Kelan are 26-year-old high school sweethearts that are obsessed with personal finance. Kelan has a bachelor’s in Business Administration and Brittany holds her masters in literacy. Brittany is following her dream of being a teacher, currently teaching fourth grade. Kelan has had a little different career path. His dream was to become a police officer since he could remember. He got hired as a Jail Deputy a few months after graduating college and worked at their local county jail for 2 ½ years. It was a VERY difficult job and extremely stressful. He quickly learned that a career in law enforcement was not for him and not what he wanted for their future. He currently works as a book keeper for their local college.
Why did you start a blog?
Simple, we want to help others get $avvy with their money! We have a passion for helping others and love talking money so it’s a natural fit.
We have been very blessed with the financial situation were in compared to others our age. This includes making some very good financial decisions in our younger years. We have always stuck to a budget, choose low cost colleges, drive old cars we pay cash for, and live very frugal.
We started blogging as a hobby, but quickly realized that blogging can be turned into a full-time business. It’s helped a ton that I have been making money online since I was 13-years-old. I ran e-commerce stores on both eBay and Amazon through high school and college. My top three years in college I was averaging $50,000 in revenue per year. Off of that $50,000 I would profit anywhere between $5,000-$10,000. A great side hustle allowing me to pay my way through college.
Our plan is to turn our website into a full-time income allowing me (Kelan) to run it full time! Brittany has off during the summer being a teacher so it’s a perfect business for us to run together.
What is the focus of your blog and why did you choose that niche?
Our blogs focus is personal finance. We found that writing about living frugal and free would come very natural to us since that’s how we live. Through our upbringing and education we have a vast knowledge about money and strive to continue to learn each day. We LOVE talking about money and it comes natural so it was a no-brainer. Our readers have really loved some of our content, which is a huge motivating factor.
What are some of your blog goals for the rest of the year?
Our number one goal is to turn it into a full-time income for myself (Kelan). We strive to live off one salary to begin with so making the transition to full-time entrepreneur /blogger will not be a hard financial burden.
We plan on doing this by not only our blog, but also freelancing, e-commerce, and digital marketing. The great thing about the internet is you have literally unlimited sources of income you can pursue.
As far as numbers, we want to grow our blog to 10,000 views a month by the end of summer. On social media, we want to continue to grow our following on all of our major platforms.
What are some of your personal goals for the rest of the year?
My goal (Kelan) this year is to become 100% self-employed. Since leaving college I have bounced around from job to job and continue to get the same answer, born to be an entrepreneur. There is something about being your own boss and setting your own schedule that I will never get over. Extremely motivated to make this happen this year!
Financially we want to continue to increase our net worth. We are $500 short from having a net worth of $50,000 at the age of 26, it’s exciting to see it continue to grow. Also, we want to continue to sticking to a budget and increase our savings as well.
We always have goals for personal development. We both listen to podcasts, read, and try to learn something new every day. We also both love staying fit! I lost 40lbs last year and have kept it off easily. Brittany has always been great at staying fit. Meditate and pray more!
What are some tips for staying motivated while trying to reach goals?
Set a goal and commit to it! We have always been good at following through on goals we set because we commit to them and encourage each other.
Forget about fear! Stare it in the face and fight it. Fear stops so many people from following what they want in life because of “failure”. Stop caring what others think and focus on yourself. Know what you want in life and chase after it!
What has been the hardest part of your journey?
Blogging has a learning curve! If you have never ran a website before it’s going to take a good 6 months to really start to feel confident in what you are doing. We still feel like amateurs, but are slowing gaining more and more confidence.
Time is your most valuable resource. Many bloggers start part-time like us and finding extra time to work on the blog while working full-time is difficult. It takes a lot of motivation. You need to commit to staying up a little later than normal and watching A LOT less TV.
We have found that “creating” is so much more rewarding that “consuming”. We feel much happier creating our blog then watching a whole Netflix series in one sitting.
What is your best advice for new bloggers?
START! This goes back to one of the previous questions. Stop letting fear get in the way of what you want in life. If you want to blog then do it, stop making excuses, just start.
You will learn along the way what works and what does not. A great thing about running an online business is you can try things for free, if they work great, if not then learn from it and change.
Besides getting started networking is our second piece of advice for new bloggers. There is such a great community of bloggers out there and everyone we have networked with is more than willing to help out. Join Facebook groups, write guest posts, build your social media and engage with your readers.
If you had unlimited funds right now, what would you do?
Buy an RV and travel. Our whole life’s mantra is live frugal and free. We love having the freedom to travel and not let money dictate our life. If you are $avvy with your money your freedom in life can be unlimited. Too many people allow their money to tell them what to do when it should be the other way around. Work hard so you can play hard.
